Recruiting 265 new apprentices
BAE Systems Plc is recruiting 265 apprentices in 2012, including 136 posts at its submarine building business in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria and 129 roles spread across its military aircraft business in Lancashire; its maritime businesses in Portsmouth, Hampshire, and Glasgow; and at its electronics business in Rochester, Kent. The company recorded £21.09bn turnover in 2010 and employed 90,000 staff.

£483m Contract Secured - 230 Jobs Safeguarded
A £483m contract to develop the next generation naval air defence system has been awarded to MBDA by the Ministry of Defence, safeguarding 230 jobs for a number of years at the Stevenage plant. The contract is for the Sea Captor Air Defence system which is expected to enter service in the middle of this decade. Steve Wadey is Managing Director.

65 job losses - 75 new jobs - restructuring strategy
Cobham Plc is cutting up to 65 technical and administrative jobs at its Bournemouth Airport site as part of a restructuring strategy. However, the company will create 75 new jobs in 2012, mainly for structural aircraft fitters to work on its Airbus A330 Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft.

The Ministry of Defence is cutting 80 jobs from The Fleet Air Arm, the branch of the navy responsible for the operation of naval aircraft, as part of a wider cost savings strategy. The Fleet Air Arm has bases at Culdrose, Corwall; Yeovilton, with a small base at Prestwick in Scotland

£23m contracts won - Delivery before End of 2014 - Order book £61.4bn
Derby based power systems company Rolls-Royce has won two contracts worth £23m to design and equip seven vessels for a Brazilian ship company. All seven vessels will be equipped with advanced Rolls-Royce technology to support effective manoeuvring, cargo handling and safe operation. They are expected to be delivered before the end of 2014. The company employs more than 39,000 staff across the globe and has facilities in 50 countries. The company's order book was £61.4bn at 30 June 2011.

400 Royal Navy jobs lost - redundancy strategy moderated
The Ministry of Defence is cutting a further 400 Royal Navy jobs in 2012, but has withdrawn plans to make further redundancies during the year because of concern over sailors' morale. Although a further 3,700 jobs will be lost, this will be achieved by slowing down recruitment and not replacing people who leave or retire.
