Regional expansion strategy - creating jobs
Energy management consultancy Orchard Energy is expanding into the Midlands and South East. By February 2012 it plans to have teams in place in Redhill, Surrey; and Northampton; and is also creating new jobs at its head office in West Yorkshire. The expansion follows strong UK growth.

Rutland factory to close - 31 jobs lost
Generator firm Cummins is closing a factory it co-owns in Oakham, Rutland, with the loss of 31 jobs. The factory will close in April 2012 with production moved to Mexico and Japan. Cummins had a 40 per cent share in the company and Sawafuji a 60 per cent share.

£63m BP contract secured - 100 jobs secured
Offshore engineering group Subsea 7 has secured a £63m contract with BP for work on a major project off the Shetland Islands. The contract will secure the future of 100 jobs in Wick. Subsea 7, a £59.6m turnover company with a 5,500-strong global workforce, has previously worked with BP on similar contracts.

Full Year Earnings up - Cash Flow up - 97000 employees
Royal Dutch Shell's fourth quarter 2011 earnings, on a current cost of supplies basis, were $6.5bn compared with $5.7bn in the same quarter a year ago. Full year 2011 CCS earnings were $28.6bn compared with $18.6bn in 2010. Cash flow from operating activities was $6.5 billion for the fourth quarter 2011 and $36.8 billion for the full year.

Stake doubbled in South African company
Rio Tinto will increase its stake in Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) to 74 per cent through the acquisition of BHP Billiton's 37 per cent interest. The final consideration for the acquisition will be determined through a previously agreed valuation process. Completion is subject to regulatory approvals. RBM is a South African mineral sands mining and processing operation.

Energy firm SSE Plc expects an increase in pre-tax profits for the financial year to 31 March 2012, despite a fall in customer numbers. Capital and investment expenditure will total approximately £1.7bn for 2011/12 as a whole, with good progress made in large capital projects.

Potential new jobs - £11.7bn energy meter programme
BGlobal Plc expects to create jobs after a £11.7bn scheme to distribute energy reading devices to homes and businesses was revived. The programme was delayed by the government in 2011 but BGlobal is now working with an experienced retailer to establish a new energy supplier to enter the residential market.
