Site for new hospital identified - 20m capital investment - employment opportunities
Northumbria Healthcare Trust is to build a 20m hospital at the Berwick Academy site, potentially creating new jobs. It will launch a 12-month consultation process followed by a six-month tender process. The hospital could be completed by summer 2015.

Building new hospital - 299m capital investment - potential new jobs
North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust is building a 299m hospital in Wynyard to replace two existing hospitals. The development, which is expected to create employment and business opportunities, will be financed through pension funds. Kevin Oxley is lead director for the new hospital project.

25m Growing Places fund - creating thousands of jobs
North-east firms will benefit from the 25m Growing Places fund awarded by the Department for Communities and Local Government. The fund will support significant regeneration projects in the region, including the development of Newcastle Central Station into new office and hotel space. The fund is expected to create or safeguard 23,000 jobs.

Stockton Council is investing 1m to create a new digital business centre in Stockton-on-Tees. The centre is expected to attract digital and new media businesses to the town, creating 33 jobs. The development is part of a 20m strategy to regenerate the whole town centre.

Acquires Certiport - expansion of professional testing business
Person Plc is acquiring US-based Certiport Inc. from Spire Capital Partners for 140m dollars. The acquisition will strengthen Pearsons professional testing business. Rapidly-expanding Certiport, which develops certification exams and practice tests of IT and digital literacy skills, recorded revenues of 48m dollars in 2011.

New £430m contract - Outsourcing plans for UK retailer
International service company Serco, based in Hook in Hampshire, has produced a contract which will involve contact centres being outsourced in a £430m deal. The Business Process Oursourcing (BPO) contract has been made to improve efficiency of customer contact services for Shop Direct Group, a UK retail company. Christopher Hyman is Chief Executive of the Serco Group.

£61m disposal of VT Services - increase in profits and revenue
Babcock International has sold US defence business VT Services for £61m to VT Holdings Inc. VT Service was acquired as part of the takeover of VT Group in 2010 and does not fit with Babcocks strategy. Babcock recorded revenue of £3.1bn in 2011, compared with £2.7bn in 2010, while pre-tax profit increased from £216.7m to £274.1m.

Advice service creates 23 jobs - service extended
A free business advice service provided by Derbyshire Dales District Council has been extended. The service has supported 60 businesses and helped to create 23 jobs over the four months since it was launched. The contract for professional business adviser Heather Bradford has been extended to the end of March 2013.

15 security jobs lost - Review of security
G4S is to cut 15 security staff at MediaCityUK in Salford, Greater Manchester after the owner, Peel Holdings, undertook a review of security levels. The company intends to re-deploy as many officers as possible. The changes are to take affect from 1st July 2012.

Vigalab Mineral Laboratory acquired - expansion in Chile
Intertek, which provides quality and safety solutions, has acquired Vigalab, a Chile-based minerals testing laboratory. The acquisition strengthens Interteks international minerals capabilities and extends its delivery of quality solutions in support of the expanding market in Latin America. Intertek recorded turnover of £1.7bn in 2011 and had 31,712 employees.
