Ellesmere Port factory safeguarded - 100s new jobs - new Astra model
General Motors has indicated that the future of Vauxhall factory in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire is secure, along with 2,100 jobs. The manufacturer is expected to confirm the creation of hundreds more jobs at the plant. The factory is expected to produce the new Astra, along with a factory in Poland, from 2015.

New training academy - 230 jobs created
Aston Martin has opened a 1,400 sq m new training academy in Gaydon, Warwickshire, to train new employees. 230 new jobs have been created by the transfer of production of the Rapide model from Austria to Gaydon. Training will be carried out by staff recruited from the company's own production lines.

The talks concern working practices at the plant, including the introduction of a third shift to increase both efficiency and production. Global sales reach record levels - profit increased to £585m - positive outlook
Nissan recorded global sales of 4.8 million units in 2011, a record for the company. Net profit increased to 75.3bn yen (£585m) in the 2012 first quarter, up from 30.8bn yen a year earlier, helped by expansion into fast-growing markets. Nissan outperformed rivals Toyota and Honda and expects an even better performance in 2012.

Car retailer Halliwell Jones is expanding in Southport, Warrington and Chester after securing 7.6m funding from the Co-operative Bank. The funding is part of a 9.2m investment in its dealerships which is expected to create new jobs over three years. 2011 turnover was 186m, 330 employees.
