New R&D project - creating jobs in Befast - business expansion
Software firm Kainos is launching a research and development project at its Belfast office, creating 8 jobs. The expanding company will invest almost £4m in staff training. Kainos employs 300 staff across its offices in Belfast, Dublin, London and Gdansk. 2011 turnover was £17m.

Outsourcing company Atos won £24m of contracts with The Department for Work and Pensions in 2011. This included the Government Gateway contract, which is due to end in 2014 and is worth a total of £47m.

£225k business loan received - Company to expand work with charities
Software and services company Azurri Computer Systems, based in Bolton in Lancashire, has secured a £225,000 loan from FW Capital. The investment will enable Azurri to extend its position in the charity retail sector which currently equates for 25 per cent of the companys turnover. The company is aiming at making IT solutions more affordable for charities. Alastair Petrie is Managing Director of Azurri Computer Systems.

MoD contract secured - potential new jobs
Liverpool-based IT consultancy Human Recognition Systems has been awarded supplier status under the Ministry of Defence Framework Agreement for Technical Support. Human Recognition Systems will be the only specialist biometrics provider included in the agreement. The contract has the potential to create jobs.

Profits up 15% to 3.1bn dollars - improved outlook
US-based IBM recorded a 15% increase in 2012 first-quarter earnings helped by strong demand for its software services and expansion in emerging markets. Revenue remained steady at 24.7bn dollars. The company has increased its full-year target to at least 15 dollars adjusted earnings per shape from at least 14.85 dollars.

Major government contract secured - high performance computing centre
IBM has secured a major contract with the Science and Technology Facilities Council. IBM BlueGene/Q and iDataplex hardware will be used at a 30m International Centre of Excellence for Computational Science and Engineering in Daresbury, Cheshire.
