Acquires Certiport - expansion of professional testing business
Person Plc is acquiring US-based Certiport Inc. from Spire Capital Partners for 140m dollars. The acquisition will strengthen Pearsons professional testing business. Rapidly-expanding Certiport, which develops certification exams and practice tests of IT and digital literacy skills, recorded revenues of 48m dollars in 2011.

Business sold for £17.5m - Managing Director and Operations Director remain with business
Training and development company Business Employment Services Training (BEST), based in Leeds, has been acquired by Reading based support services and construction company Interserve. BEST Managing Director Michelle Manson and Operations Director Andrea Cook will remain with the business following the acquisition. Adrian Ringrose is Chief Executive of Interserve.

50 new jobs - business growth - Turnover £3.5m - 250 Employees

Sales upto £1.16bn - Net Debt £705m - 36,300 Employees
Publishing company Pearson continues to expect growth in sales and operating profits, despite markets not showing many signs of improvement. Sales increased by 11% at constant exchange rates to £1.16bn in the first three months of the year. Net debt increased during the first quarter by £206m to £705m, level with the first quarter of 2011.

Partnership with the MoD - potential new jobs
Middlesbrough-based TTE Technical Training Group has entered a new partnership with the Ministry of Defence. TTE will provide NVQ-accredited training and qualifications to support the transition of armed forces personnel into engineering careers in the oil and gas, process and manufacturing sectors. The contract has the potential to create jobs. 2010: turnover £11m, 147 employees.

Profits up 10% - growth in international markets
Recruitment firm Hays expects operating profit for the year to June 2012 to be at the top end of market estimates. It recorded a better-than-expected 10% increase in third-quarter gross profit, helped by a 26% increase in net fees in its Continental Europe and the rest of the world division. Year to June 2011: turnover £3.25bn; 7,245 employees.

£1bn acquisition strategy - profits up 7% to £942m
Education and publishing group Pearson Plc expects growth in all divisions in 2012, despite difficult global trading conditions, and is investing approximately £1bn in acquisitions. The group's 2011 performance exceeded analyst's expectations with sales increasing 1% to £5.86bn and operating profit up 7% to £942m.

40 new jobs - opening seventh branch - refurbishment underway
Snapdragons Nurseries Ltd is opening a new nursery at the former Norton Radstock Veterinary College in Keynsham in September 2012. Approximately 40 jobs from apprenticeships to graduate posts will be created. The building is currently being refurbished. Snapdragons 2010 turnover was £2.5m and 131 staff were employed.

26 jobs lost - administrators fail to secure buyer - company to be wound up
Administrators from Pricewaterhouse Coopers have failed to find a buyer for BXL Services and are to wind up the company. All 26 employees have been redundant. The charity, which had a £1m turnover, provided support for young people, including work experience and work-related learning. It was unable to reduce a substantial pension deficit.
