Profits growth expected - £1.7bn capital investment
Energy firm SSE Plc expects an increase in pre-tax profits for the financial year to 31 March 2012, despite a fall in customer numbers. Capital and investment expenditure will total approximately £1.7bn for 2011/12 as a whole, with good progress made in large capital projects.

£4bn orders - Sales £4.09bn - 5046 employees
ENGINEERING company Alstom has secured orders worth more than £4 billion for its third quarter. The French-owned company, which employs almost 2,000 people in Stafford, received £4.09 billion of orders from October last year to the end of December. Sales also reached £4.09 billion.

£3m energy centre - 40 new jobs
Construction work has begun on a £3m Energy Centre at Skypark in Devon which will be operated by E.ON UK Plc. Construction of the centre will create around 40 jobs. The facility is part of the £210m Skypark development, a joint venture between E.ON, St Modwen and Devon County Council.

38-acre site secured - potential renewable energy development
National Grid Plc has purchased the 38-acre Carrington Plains development site in Manchester. The site was sold by Cushman & Wakefield on behalf of administrators at BDO. The site has the potential to be developed for a number of uses including renewable energy.

Joint Venture awarded £1.5bn Network Rail contract
Alstom, the energy solutions, power transmission technologies and transport company and Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure groups, joint venture Signalling Solutions Limited (SSL), has secured involvement in seven of the eight geographical regions covered by Network Rails seven year new signalling frameworks plans. The contract is worth a total of £1.5bn. In three of the regions SSL is primary supplier and in 4 geographical regions, Scotland, Central West, Wales and Western and Kent & Anglia, SSL is secondary supplier.

£42m contract acquired - 12 jobs created
Engineering company Alstom, based in Rugby, Warwickshire, has been awarded a £42m contract by rolling stock leasing company Porterbrook. Porterbrook has selected Alstom to create a fleet of 36 five-car suburban trains to run on South West Trains routes. Alstom will be recruiting an additional 12 engineers to provide a team of 25 to support the project. Terence Watson is Managing Director of Alstom Transport in the UK and Ireland.
