Profitability maintained - Npower contract secured
Despite challenging trading conditions Lancashire -based BGlobal remained profitable in the year to March 2012 and cash generative at an operational level. The volume of meter installations in the industrial and commercial sector slowed, but strong interest in data services continues. A contract with Npower has been secured. 2011 turnover £29m, 243 employees.

£3.56bn loss - restructuring strategy - 10,000 job losses
Japanese electronics company Sony recorded a loss of £3.56bn for the year to March 2012, its fourth consecutive year of losses. It is to undergo a £620m restructuring programme to help it return to profit. The company is cutting 10,000 jobs. Sales for the year fell 9.6% to £50bn.

Substantial new contracts - sales down 26% - positive outlook
Wolfson Microelectronics gained record levels of new contracts in the 2012 first quarter in terms of value. Although revenues fell from £25.3m in the 2011 first quarter to £18.7m and pre-tax losses increased to £5.2m, the result was in line with expectations. A return to sustainable growth and underlying profitability is expected.

Profits down 61% to 88m dollars - increased costs - focusing on new products
US-based mobile chip designer Broadcom recorded a 61% fall in profits to 88m dollars in the 2012 first quarter. Revenue increased slightly to 1.83bn dollars but settlement and research and development costs increased. Broadcom is expanding into next generation wireless networking and is moving away from the smartphone system-on-chip market.

Vertu brand disposal - 256m dollar venture capital investment
Mobile phone manufacturer Nokia is planning to sell its luxury Vertu brand to venture capital firm Permira for up to 256m dollars. Negotiations regarding the disposal are believed to be at an advanced stage. Nokia recorded a loss of 1.7bn dollars for the first quarter of 2012.

Profits up 80% to £203m - healthcare sales up 9%
Electronics company Philips recorded an 80% increase in net profits to £203m in the 2012 first quarter, while sales grew 4%. The healthcare division performed strongly with sales up 9% but sales of consumer lifestyle products fell 1% compared with the 2011 first quarter. The outlook for 2012 remains uncertain.
