New chairman appointed
Natural gas exploration and production company BG Group has appointed Andrew Gould as chairman. Mr Gould succeeded Sir Robert Wilson with effect from 16 May 2012. The Berkshire-based company recorded turnover of £10.3bn in 2010 and had 6,079 employees.

Gas supplier acquired by energy giant - Sold for 19m
Belfast headquartered Phoenix Supply, the largest natural gas supplier in Northern Ireland, is to be purchased by energy giant SSE Plc for 19.1m. The company, which has 130,000 customers, is being acquired from its private equity owner Terra Firma. SSE has agreed a deal through its wholly-owned subsidiary Airtricity Energy Supply (Northern Ireland) to buy the entire issued share capital in Phoenix Supply and to purchase Phoenix Energy, which supplies gas in the Republics deregulated commercial supply market. Peter Dixon is Group Chief Executive of Phoenix Energy.

Revenues fall 86% - production restarted at Galoc oil field
Oil and gas exploration and production company Forum Energy recorded 2012 first quarter revenues of 0.2m dollars, an 86% decline from the 2011 first quarter. The fall was due to temporary suspension of production at the Galoc oil field during an upgrade, and production has now returned to normal.

550 potential new jobs - new green power station
Centrica Energy is planning to build a new green power station at Scawby Brook, North Lincolnshire as part of its ongoing expansion. The development would create up to 50 full-time jobs as well as 500 during the building phase. The proposed site is next to an existing Centrica gas-fired power station.

Agora acquisition completed - business expansion strategy
Edinburgh-based Cairn Energy has completed the acquisition of Agora Oil & Gas. Norway-based Agora is now 100% owned by Cairn. The acquisition is part of Cairns strategy to build a balanced portfolio and has already proved beneficial through the Skarfjell discovery in the Norwegian North Sea. Cairn Energy 2010 turnover was £103.2m, 1,020 employees.

Leisure complex sold for £50m
BP Pension Fund has sold The Cornerhouse, a big leisure complex in Nottingham to London based Land Securities, the largest real estate investment trust in the UK, for £50m. The purpose built leisure scheme covers 225,000 square feet and includes a 14 screen cinema, shopping facilities, 11 restaurants, two bars, a nightclub and a casino.

Profits fall to £2.95bn - 6% decline in production - asset disposal programme
Oil company BP recorded profits of £2.95bn in the 2012 first quarter, compared with £3.06bn in the previous quarter and expectations of £3.07bn. It is selling off billions of pounds of assets following the Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. Gas and oil production has fallen 6%. 2011 turnover £241.6bn, 81,500 employees.

10 Scottish jobs lost - 5 year plan
Heriot-Watt is to cut 10 jobs at the universitys School of Textiles and Design in Galashiels, in the Scottish Borders, representing one-quarter of its staff. The University has developed a five-year plan designed to ensure the continued financial sustainability of the school.

Profits up 11% to £4.7bn - international expansion strategy
Royal Dutch Shells profits increased 11% to £4.7bn in the 2012 first quarter helped by rising oil prices. The target for disposals has been increased to £2.5bn from £1.9bn and investment will be increased. The company has submitted a £1.1bn bid for Cove Energy in order to enter gas fields off Mozambique and Kenya.
