Decline in half-year profits to $9.94bn - 10% revenue growth
Challenging economic conditions in Europe contributed to a decline in mining company BHP Billiton's profits in the 2011 second half, after demand for commodities fell. Half-year profits declined 5.5% to $9.94bn, compared with analysts' expectations of $10bn. However revenues increased 9.7% to $37.5bn. Staff headcount was 40,757.

Stake doubbled in South African company
Rio Tinto will increase its stake in Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) to 74 per cent through the acquisition of BHP Billiton's 37 per cent interest. The final consideration for the acquisition will be determined through a previously agreed valuation process. Completion is subject to regulatory approvals. RBM is a South African mineral sands mining and processing operation.

£5.8m loss at coal producer - Group sales up 7% - Renegotiation of contract
Coal producer ATH Resources, based in Doncaster, Yorkshire, has recorded a year-end loss of £5.8m in 2011 and made an operating profit of £3m, a £4m fall compared to 2010. Group sales increased by 7% to £84.2m. In order to continue to develop the business, the group has renegotiated one of its legacy contracts and has expanded its project pipeline. Alistair Black is Chief Executive of ATH.

£902,000 stake in Uranium Energy Corp
Red Rock Resources Plc has acquired a £902,000 stake in US-based Uranium Energy Corp (UEC), following UEC's deal to acquire Toronto-based Cue Resources in a £6m deal. Red Rock owns 18.9 billion Cue shares and as a result of the deal it will will subsequently hold 368,551 UEC shares.
