£61m disposal of VT Services - increase in profits and revenue
Babcock International has sold US defence business VT Services for £61m to VT Holdings Inc. VT Service was acquired as part of the takeover of VT Group in 2010 and does not fit with Babcocks strategy. Babcock recorded revenue of £3.1bn in 2011, compared with £2.7bn in 2010, while pre-tax profit increased from £216.7m to £274.1m.

70 Jobs Lost - Manufacturing Transfering to China
Smith & Nephew are proposing to move the manufacturing of some products from its factory in Hull to China with the loss of up to 70 jobs by the end of next year. The company remains committed to the future of the Hull site and has created 100 additional jobs since opening its facility in China in 2009.

Potential £500m takeover by Ferrovial - merger with Amey
Outsourcing services provider Enterprise could be acquired by Ferrovial, the owner of Heathrow airport. Advanced talks are underway over the takeover bid which is estimated to be worth £500m. Ferrovial plans to merge the business with Amey, its British engineering subsidiary.

New Waste Facility - 275 New Jobs - £750 PFI Initiative
The build of a new hi-tech waste treatment and recycling facility are expected to be signed off by the end of 2012 creating around 275 jobs. The project is part of a £750m Private Finance Initiative which is expected to be operational in 2013. Profits fall 19 per cent - Chief Executive resigns - New Chairman appointed
London based multinational pharmaceutical and biologics company, AstraZeneca, has recorded a 19 per cent fall in profits for the first quarter to March 2012. Chief Executive David Brennan is to step down from his position in June 2012. Mr Brennan will be replaced on an interim basis by Chief Financial Officer Simon Lowth while a permanent successor is found. In addition, Leif Johansson will succeed Louis Schweitzer as Non-Executive Chairman.

New five year contract secured
Engineering and project management company Amec has secured a new five year major framework contract from the North London Waste Authority. As part of the contract, Amec will help implement new waste services infrastructure for north London and will provide technical and planning services to the authority. Transferring work from Hull to China - 40 job losses
Medical products company Smith & Nephew is transferring some manufacturing from its Advanced Wound Management facility in Hull to a new factory in Suzhou, China. 40 jobs will be lost in Hull, however new products are being developed in China and could eventually be brought to the Hull site. 2010: turnover £2.46bn, 10,172 employees.

Profits up 12.5% to 3.91bn dollars - pharmaceutical sales up 1.2%
US health care company Johnson & Johnson recorded a 12.5% increase in 2012 first quarter earnings to 3.91bn dollars, helped by sales of new products including prostate cancer drug Zytiga. Worldwide pharmaceutical sales increased by 1.2% to 6.13bn dollars. Turnover fell by 0.2% to 16.14bn dollars.
