Major managed services contract secured - expansion in UK
Chinese telecommunications equipment and services provider Huawei has secured a contract to provide network planning and implementation services to Telefonica O2 UK in a five-year outsourcing agreement. 56 permanent roles and 62 contractors will transfer to Huawei.

Creating 80 jobs - call centre expansion - seeking telesales staff
Telecoms firm BT is strengthening its telesales operation at its South Tyneside call centre. It is recruiting up to 80 new employees, increasing headcount to 700 at the £10.5m business centre. The new recruits will sell BT products and services to new and existing customers. 2011 turnover £20bn.

Profit up 16% to 2.42bn - revenue down 4% to 19.3bn
BT Group recorded a 16.2% increase in pre-tax profit to 2.42bn in the year to March 2012, however full year revenue declined by 4% to 19.3bn. In the fourth quarter pre-tax profit increased 13% to 690m, while earnings increased 4% to 1,609m.

Contract won with council - New speech recognition technology
Eckoh Plc, a provider of speech recognition and payment solutions, and Azzurri Communications, a provider of managed communications services, have won a contract to supply Essex County Council with new speech recognition technology. Eckoh will develop and implement the solution across the Councils customer service operations. The purpose is to reduce call waiting times, free up contact centre agents and achieve cost savings for the Council which services 1.4 million people.

New Northern Ireland contact centre - 120 jobs created
British Telecom is opening a new state-of-the-art contact centre in Belfast, Northern Ireland, creating 120 jobs. The company will employ a total of 2,600 people in Northern Ireland. Colm ONeill is CEO for Northern Ireland. 568,000 of support was proviced by Invest Northern Ireland.

New mobile application launched - Mobile commerce services
UK telecommunications provider O2 has launched a mobile application that supports a range of mobile commerce services. The new mobile application supports transfers, m-commerce and pre-paid accounts. The application also offers in-store shopping functionality, allowing users to scan product barcodes and check prices in other outlets.

Business growth - Revenues rises 2.4 per cent - Market spend up 50 per cent
Virgin Media, which provides fixed and mobile telephone, television and broadband internet services, has reported a 2.4 per cent rise in revenues up to March 2012 as a result of growth across the consumer and business segments. Advertising spend £53m - Subscriber Numbers Up - Turnover £533.6m
Virgin Media's decision to increase advertising spend by 50 per cent to £53m in the past quarter, has grown subscriber numbers for its premium pay-TV and super-fast broadband. The number of subscribers to TiVo grew by 242,000 to 677,000. Subscribers for broadband grew by 147,000 to 844,000. However, Virgin's total cable customer base rose by only 21,000 to 4.8 million. Chief financial officer is Eamonn O'Hare.
