£3.6m contract secured - potential new jobs
Construction company Strategic Team Group has secured a £3.6m contract to improve Liverpool Central underground station. The contract is part of a £5m programme funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Merseytravel. New jobs are expected as a result of the development. 2011 turnover £46.5m, 188 employees.

Terminal expansion approved - 300 potential new jobs
London Southend Airport has secured approval for the second phase of its terminal expansion. The development of the new 90 metre long terminal and the subsequent increase in aircraft based at the airport, will create 300 operational and service jobs. Construction work on the extension is expected to start in 2012. Turnover in 2011 was £5.4m, 77 employees.

10m student village scheme - 225 flats in Liverpool
Vinci Construction UK has been appointed as the preferred contractor on a 10m student village scheme in Liverpool, Merseyside. The project consists of 261 student rooms across 225 flats and a further 36 studio rooms and is owned by regeneration group Iliad.

4m capital investment - library refurbishment - potential new jobs
Devon County Council has appointed construction company Mansell to carry out the 4.1m re-development of Exeter Central Library. Work will start in February 2013. Improvements will include better accessibility, increased space for children and a new cafe. The development is expected to create employment and business opportunities.

Airport acquired for £807m - Service and product improvements planned
Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), which owns Gatwick and London City airports, has acquired Edinburgh airport, Scotlands busiest airport, for £807m. GIP is planning to improve products and services at the airport, including speeding up boarding times, initiatiating improved security checks and offering more long haul destinations. Michael McGhee is the GIP partner leading the acquisition.

New NSPCC centre - New services
The NSPCC is to open a new centre in Sheffield in April 2012. The centre, on George Street in the city centre, will be offering cutting-edge child protection services to some of the most vulnerable children and families in the community. Plans for Barrow police station approved - 8.5m capital investment
Cumbria Constabulary is investing 8.5m in a new police station in Barrow. The state of the current police station is considered to be unacceptable and unsustainable. Savings identified as part of a police estate review and produced by the sale of police buildings in Cumbria will be re-invested into the project.

Merging libraries and contact centres - 190,000 cost savings plan
Scottish Borders Council is combining libraries, contact centres, and some registrar services, in six towns in the region. Changes to opening hours have been agreed and buildings surplus to requirements will be sold. The restructuring will save the council 130,000 a year in revenue costs and 60,000 a year in property savings.
